Living better, spending less.
I’ve had a hard time posting this week. First, I was at my parents on Monday, and my mom came home with me, so I didn’t have time to do anything on Tuesday either. Once the baby was in bed, I had some work to do for the company my husband works for, and then spent a little quality time with him in front of the television. (More important than blogging sometimes, I must say!) I was planning on posting last night, but Evie refused to go to bed. They’re so willful about bedtime, aren’t they? At least mine is!
Anyway, on Tuesday, my mom and I went to Walgreens and Rite Aid. I didn’t buy much at Rite Aid, except I did add on to my mom’s purchase in order to use a $5/$25 and get fancy L’Oreal shampoo for free after SCR and coupons. Anyway, I took advantage of my mom entertaining Evelyn and ended up doing six transactions at Walgreens. I only had three to start with, but Mom and Evie were doing so well shopping for headbands, and my favorite cashier was working (and encouraging me to do as many as I wanted) that I went back to grab more free Chapstick and overage-giving shaving cream.
4 12-packs of Pepsi, 3.00 ea ($3 RR, 4 $2 coupons)
1 Starburst Gummi candy, 2.19 (Mom’s)
1 Ty beanie duckling, 2.99 (Mom’s… will be Evelyn’s on Easter!)
2 Halls cough drops, 2.29 (ad coupon to make them $1.39 each, plus 1 B1G1 coupon and 1 $0.75 coupon)
6 Chapsticks, 1.99/ea (free after RR)
4 Skintimate shaving gel, Raspberry Rain, 2.49 ($3 RR each – .51 overage!)
2 Edge shaving gel, 2.49 ($3 RR each – .51 overage!)
6 boxes of Life cereal, 2.50 (3 $1/2 coupons plus 3 $2 RR = $1/box–two of these are Mom’s)
10 Mentos gums, 2 for $2 ($1 coupons made them free)
2 Bayer Contour diabetes monitors, 14.99 (free after coupon)
1 Bayer Breeze 2 diabetes monitor, 14.99 (free after coupon)
3 Crest Pro Health toothpastes, 4.29 (free after catalina coupons received from buying the monitors in the first three transactions)
I received a total of $39 in Register Rewards (I think… if I counted right) and the three coupons for free toothpaste. After my mom paid me for her two items, I have a total cost (minus RR) of $5.04 in the above picture. I couldn’t figure out exactly how it got to be that much at first but then I remembered that I did buy six boxes of cereal for a dollar each… :)
And, this is why I find it so hard to post pictures of my shopping trips. Just after I snapped the above picture, I decided that I should try again, since I did cut the edges of the stuff off and Evie is looking in the wrong direction. So I pressed the button again, and here is what I got:
This is just not a project that a 22-month-old can really be a part of, you know? :)
What Do You Do With All This Stuff? The cereal will be eaten. Two boxes went home with my mom and the other four are in the queue here to be eaten. (Life is my favorite and I actually will pay full price if I have to, upon occasion.) The cough drops are for my grandfather. I gave two bottles of shaving gel, four bottles of Mentos and one chapstick to my mom as a thank you for watching the baby while I did six transactions. The diabetes testing kits, shaving gel, chapstick and toothpaste will go into my stockpile, where I will either give them away or put them in the yard sale.
When I became a stay-at-home-mom, I promised I could save our family money by shopping sales and maybe even using a few coupons. I had no idea what I was getting into. These days, I am on a first-name basis with the cashiers at the local drugstores, I haven't paid for toothpaste or shampoo in over a year and I spend my free time here, helping others do the same. So please, make yourself at home while you learn how to save, and when to spend!
